Japan launched the First Sino-Japanese War to invade China in 1894, and the Qing Government was defeated. On April 17, 1895, the Qing Dynasty was forced to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki, and Japan thus forcibly seized the Taiwan and Penghu islands of China, beginning its 50 years long colonization.
