CHINA’S Ji Jing won the gold medal in the women’s 53kg weightlift at the Bao’an Sports Center in Bao’an District on August,14th, the fourth gold medal bagged by the Chinese team.

Ji lifted a total of 222kg, including the 100kg snatch and the 122kg clean and jerk.

Hsu Chun-ching of Chinese Taipei pocketed silver and Pramsiri Bunphithak of Thailand took bronze.

“I was very confident of winning the gold medal and I was in very good form today. The result was very satisfactory,” Ji said.

Born in 1987, Ji moved to the women’s 53kg division up from 48kg this year. During the national weightlifting championships in May, she bagged three gold medals and became a rising star in national women’s weightlifting.

Targeting the gold medal, Ji lifted 92kg in the snatch lift in the first round and after two successful trial lifts, she lifted 100kg in the third round, which equalled the world record.

In the clean and jerk, she raised 115kg in the first round for the gold medal, so she then challenged herself for a better result.

“After knowing I had already won the gold medal, I decided to continue to achieve a better result,” she said.

She lifted 122kg in the second round, which equalled her best earlier this year, but she failed to lift 127kg in the third round.

She now hopes to win selection for the London Olympics next year. “The Universiade is a precious chance to gain experience at international level. After the Games, I will start a new round of training with what I’ve learned at the Games,” she said.
