UN marks Honor Day at Expo 2010

United Nations celebrated its Honor Day at Expo 2010 this afternoon with performance from pavilions representing various countries.

UN's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon gave a video address, noting that this year is the 65th anniversary of the founding of the UN and UN has played a key role in preserving world peace, promoting international cooperation, coping with global challenges and accelerate mutual development.

The UN will strive on it efforts to eliminate poverty and injustice, fulfill United Nations Millennium Development Goals and realize the future described by the Charter of the United Nations, Ban added.

Awni Behnam, UN's commissioner general to World Expo, said the UN Pavilion has promoted UN's core philosophies and exhibited harmony and mutual prosperity in diverse backgrounds.

The World Expo has less than one week to go and this is a new beginning of human historic march for better future rather than an ending, Behnam added.

Chen Xu, Director General of the International Department of Foreign Ministry, said that China is a firm supporter and an active participant of the UN.

The UN Pavilion's theme is "One World, One UN" and the pavilion showcased UN and its affiliated international organizations' useful trials and successful practices in sustainable development, coping with climate changes, said Chen.

The pavilion also gave visitors an opportunity to closely observe the UN and share UN's cooperation development thinking.

During the ceremony, artists from different countries staged performances.
