Shaanxi unfolded its week-long culture show at the World Expo yesterday. The Baosteel Stage, the main venue, has been decorated like a palace of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), a prosperous era in ancient China when Xi'an, the provincial capital, was the heart of China.

A parade of 300 terra-cotta warriors takes place on Bocheng Road every noon to visualize the formidable army of Qin Shi Huang who unified China in 221 BC and was buried in Xi'an with thousands of terra-cotta warriors.

The culture show also displays the traditional art forms of paper-cutting and clay sculpture at the Baosteel Stage. Meanwhile, seven folk artists from Shaanxi demonstrate their handicrafts at the Life &Sunshine Pavilion.

The province will also distribute coupons for its tourist attractions at the Baosteel Stage. The coupons can be used when buying tickets to Xi’an Museum and the Crested Ibis Nature Reserve in Hanzhong City.

Shanghai Party secretary Yu Zhengsheng and Shaanxi Party secretary Zhao Leji attended yesterday's opening ceremony. Zhao Zhengyong, the acting Shaanxi governor, and Shanghai Vice Mayor Yang Xiong delivered speeches on the occasion.

The Shaanxi Pavilion at China's Joint Provincial Pavilion is among the first built. There, two robots and two actors portray a Tang emperor and his legendary concubine. They greet visitors and pose for pictures, leaving visitors wondering how to tell robots from humans.
