COPENHAGEN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moo here on Thursday that China attached great importance to the U.N. role in dealing with global climate change.

He said Ban and the U.N. had a unique and major role in promoting international cooperation on the issue.

Wen told Ban during their meeting China would continue to give its support to Ban in performing his duty as a U.N. secretary-general as usual.

Wen said that, in order to show confidence and the ability of mankind in meeting the challenge of climate change, leaders of all countries should give a strong political impetus to the U.N. climate change conference and make earnest efforts to make it a success as anticipated by the world.

Ban said the United Nations and he himself were willing to try their best to promote trust and cooperation among parties involved in the current climate change negotiations, urging them to try to overcome the difficulties they encounter and keep the talks on the right track.

Developed countries should honor their commitments and help developing countries in combating the negative effects of climate change with financial and technological support, said the U.N. chief.

He said the United Nations highly appreciated efforts made by the Chinese government in tackling climate change and attached importance to the role China played in this area and was willing to continue cooperation with China.

Wen arrived in Copenhagen, capital of Denmark, on Wednesday evening to attend the U.N. Climate Change conference, which is scheduled to conclude on Friday.
