CANBERRA -- Over 100 people on Wednesday attended celebration of 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China at the Chinese Embassy in Australia.

Jason Clare MP Minister for Defense Materiel attended the event on behalf of the Australian federal government.

"I offer the government of the People's Republic of China and the Chinese people the warmest congratulations of the Australian people on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China," Clare delivered the remarks on behalf of Australian prime minister.

Senator Kate Lundy, the Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, also said that she is happy to see Chinese language being spoken widely in Australia.

"As I walk across Canberra or indeed any city or town in Australia, I hear the sound of Chinese dialects which taken together represent Australia's second most widely spoken language after English," she said.

Earlier on Sunday, former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke congratulated the anniversary, and said China had achieved unparalleled achievement in the past 62 years, which not only improved Chinese people's living standard, but also contributed much to the prosperity of the world.

Despite rainy weather in Canberra, representatives from various government departments, embassies and the local communities arrived on Wednesday in Chinese Embassy in Canberra to celebrate the 62nd anniversary.
