BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's major news websites and gateways are decorating their homepages with symbolic red to mark the National Day on Thursday.

Many put up designs of red flags, lanterns and fireworks, and major websites such as people.com.cn, xinhuanet.com, sina.com and 163.com carried special reports on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Xinhuanet.com, website of Xinhua News Agency, put up a collection of videos and photos about the country's changes over the past six decades and interviews with government ministers.

People.com.cn, website sponsored by the Communist Party of China newspaper People's Daily, created a special report on landmark moments over the last 60 years.

QQ.com, a popular commercial website, promoted a special report titled "the Legend of China," displaying progress in political, economic and cultural sectors as well as in the daily life.

About 60 websites, organized by the State Council Information Office, jointly sponsored an online contest of multi-media works named "A Day in China" on Sept. 19. The works were required to record what happened within 24 hours on Sept. 19.

Internet users have submitted about 870,000 pieces of art works, including stories, photos, animation and video programs, said an office spokesman.

They attracted about 360 million views and 1.8 million posts, the spokesman said.

"Sixty years are considered a full circle. I wish our motherland prosperity and our people happiness and security," said a message posted by "Gracefully Lonely."
