Chinese president's 1911 Revolution centenary anniversary speech published

BEIJING -- President Hu Jintao's speech at Sunday's ceremony marking the centenary anniversary of the 1911 Revolution was published on Monday, according to a statement from the publisher.

The People's Publishing House said in a press release that the speech, titled "remarks on the commemorative ceremony for the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution," has been published and is now available at Xinhua Bookstore outlets across the country.

China held a high-profile ceremony on Sunday morning at the Great Hall of People to commemorate the 1911 Revolution, or Xinhai Revolution.

Beginning on Oct. 10, 1911 with a series of uprisings, the Revolution toppled the Qing Dynasty, ending 2,000 years of imperial rule and giving birth to the first republic in Asia.

In his keynote speech at the ceremony, Hu spoke highly of the revolution, saying that it was "a thoroughly modern, national and democratic revolution."

Hu eulogized Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the leader of the revolution, as "a great national hero, a great patriot and a great leader of the Chinese democratic revolution."

Hu said the rejuvenation of China must be achieved by adhering to socialism with Chinese characteristics and by upholding peace, development and cooperation.

Hu also called for the the peaceful reunification of the mainland and Taiwan.
