The most dramatic and interesting exhibits are the ancient corpses preserved and found in the desert sands. |
This 1953 museum of Uygur and Russian style, covers an exhibiting area of 7800 square meters. A green-tiled dome stands 18 meters above the main hall and enormous murals decorate the walls, domes and entrance. The articles exhibited in this museum are mainly archaeological treasures from the Silk Road and local cultural relics. There are over 50,000 cultural relics excavated on the ancient Silk Road, which includes silk, pottery and porcelain, terra-cotta figures, weapons, scriptures, etc. Also on exhibition are some mummies discovered in the vast desert. Among the 10 mummies on exhibit, the one named "sleeping beauty" is the most famous. Buried over 3,800 years, it is the earliest and best-preserved mummified body in China. Other articles on exhibit are clothing, household utensils, handicrafts, hunting and musical instruments as well as the different types of Uygur “yurts”, giving a vivid introduction of the customs and cultures
