“Peaceful reunification and one country, two systems” fully embodies the sense of principle in the country’s maintaining territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Chinese people across the Straits share the same blood relationship, the same habits and customs, the same culture and the same national sentiments ready to hold together. Any force cannot divide this. It is the common aspiration of the people across the Straits to realize the reunification of motherland.
The policy fully respects Taiwan’s history and reality. Despite the significant economic development for the past decades in Taiwan, the unpredictable political status of Taiwan, popular anxiety, small territory and dense population, shortage of resources and confined market all have a negative influence on its economic development. If the policy of “one country, two systems” is adopted to settle the Taiwan question peacefully and realize the reunification of motherland, Taiwan can further accelerate its economic development and is provided a solid guarantee for its stability and prosperity with the support of rich resources and broad market in the mainland. It is of much benefit to Taiwan.
The policy also takes the realities in the world into consideration. The Taiwan question always remains the main obstacle in Sino-U.S. The concept creatively applies and develops the principle of “peaceful co-existence”, with which to settle the Taiwan question will benefit the peace and stability in the Pacific area and the whole world.
In short, the policy of “peaceful reunification and one country, two systems” set by the Chinese government not only helps realize the country’s reunification and maintain national sovereignty but also takes the history and reality of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao into account and shows a high degree of flexibility. After its birth, the policy was first successfully applied to the settlement of the Hong Kong and Macao issues. After the Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and Macao on July 1,1997 and December 20,1999 respectively, Hong Kong and Macao have maintained prosperity, stability and development on the basis of “one country, two systems”. The successful practice of “one country” in Hong Kong and Macao on the one hand proves its quality of being scientific and on the other helps Taiwan compatriots fully understand the actual intension of the “one country, two systems”, which will have a positive impact on the final settlement of the Taiwan question. |
