Why is "adherence to the principle of one China the basis and premise for a peaceful reunification"
   日期:2001-04-17 14:39        编辑: system        来源:

For years non-governmental economic and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Strait have been very active, but the political deadlock has not been broken. The fundamental reason is that the Taiwan authorities, renouncing the principle of one China, have tried to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." The principle of one China reiterated by Jiang Zemin in his speech is the key to whether or not cross-strait relations can develop smoothly and reunification of the motherland can be accomplished. There might be different stands on, and interpretations for, the political connotations of the one China principle, but the most fundamental point of departure is persistence in the fact that there is only one China in the world, that Taiwan is part of China, that China's sovereignty and territory must not be separated, that the Taiwan issue is entirely China's internal affair, and that China must reunify. Some people in Taiwan, while professing their favoring of China's reunification, have been bent on bringing about "dual recognition" in the international arena by trying to gain a seat in the United Nations for Taiwan. This, in fact, is to split Taiwan from Chinese territory, the giving up of the one China principle, and an attempt to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan."

The correct way to accomplish a peaceful reunification of Taiwan and the mainland is to promote understanding and establish mutual trust through cross-strait exchanges and engage in political talks. These must be done on the basis and premise of the one China principle.

Under the one China principle, specific problems arising in cross-strait relations can be resolved through negotiations; the state of hostility between the two sides can be officially ended in the same way; in negotiations can also be found ways to resolve other issues of concern to the Taiwan authorities. This will lead to continued development of cross-strait relations and the creation of conditions for the eventual reunification of the motherland. The discarding of the one China principle and the creation of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" will lead Taiwan onto the road of "independence." This will inevitably result in a serious dete-rioration of relations between the two sides, harm the basic interests of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and kill the bright prospect of a peaceful reunification of the motherland.
