Jiang Zemin stated in definitive terms that the Chinese government is opposed to the engaging of activities by Taiwan in expanding its so-called "international living space" which clearly aims to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." The central government has stated time and again that it does not challenge the development of non-governmental economic and cultural ties by Taiwan with other countries. At present, Taiwan has joined more than 800 non-governmental inter- national organizations and maintains non-governmental economic, trade and cultural exchanges with many countries and regions in the world. Under the principle of one China and in accordance with the charters of relevant international organizations, Taiwan has become a member of the Asian Development Bank, the Asia-Pacific Eco-
nomic Cooperation Forum and other international economic organizations in the name of "Chinese Taipei."
With their clamor for "international living space," however, the Taiwan authorities are seeking international recognition for "the Republic of China in Taiwan" as "a country with independent sovereignty," "two international legal persons," "parallel international representations," "dual recognition" and aiwan's "return to the United Nations." All these boil down to a quest for the status of Taiwan as "an independent international personality." Clearly, they are attempts to create "two Chinas" and "one China, one Taiwan" in the international arena designed to split Taiwan from China. The Chinese government cannot but be resolutely opposed to this. |
