The NPC's Environment and Resources Protection Committee in China, has been meeting to discuss draft laws on environmental protection. If the drafts are approved, they will be submitted to the National People's Congress for ratification next year.
The meeting on Saturday focused on ways of reducing pollution and addressing energy shortages in urban areas. The greater use of recycling was also discussed, as well as reducing household waste, and improving protection of wild animals.
Chairman of NPC Environment and Resources Protection Committee Mao Rubai said:"China currently has 22 articles on environment and resources protection. This lays a solid foundation for key laws, and for future work."
The committee also called for increased legislation to combat environmental pollution. It noted that acid rain now threatens one third of China's land, following years of unchecked release of high concentrations of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere.
The committee also criticized the over-use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and their serious impact on farmland. Committee members said measures to prevent violation of China's environmental laws, including increased inspections, will be stepped up. |
