Yesterday we made a report on the opening of 6th China Fishery Festival held in Xiangshan county of East China's Zhejiang province. Xiangshan county is among the top 100 counties in the country in terms of overall economic strength. The successful holding of the festival helps implement the county's plan on eco-environment protection and sustainable development. The county is seeing a promising development in its maritime economy.
Xiangshan county is located in the coastal area of central Zhejiang Province. It lies between Xiangshan port and Sanmen Bay, covering a land area of 1,175 square kilometers and a sea area of about 5,300 square kilometers. Over 440 species of fish, 80 species of crabs and more than 100 shellfish can be found here. In 2002, the county's added value of maritime industry totaled about 2.4 billion yuan, accounting for 26.3% of its total GDP. Between January and June this year, the county turned out 234,000 tons of aquatic products, with a total value of 1.3 billion yuan.
With abundant fish resources, the county treats the maritime resources in a scientific way instead of over-exploiting the sea. (Zhou Jiangyong, head of Zhejiang's Xiangshan county: We have been developing aquaculture and cutting down fishing. We are now shifting from aquatic products processing to the development of maritime engineering and maritime tourism. )
At present, the industries related to maritime-resources such as pharmaceutical industry, health care and tourism are booming in the county. In recent years, Xiangshan county has seen a yearly revenue at a growth rate of above 40% from marine tourism. In the first eight months this year, it received visitors of 926,000 person times, an increase of 14% over the same period last year, with a total tourist income of about 370 million yuan. It has basically turned into a modern coastal city which is eco-friendly.
