COTABATO, Philippines -- A 5.7-magnitude earthquake rattled North Cotabato and nearby areas in southern Philippines at dawn Monday with damages and aftershocks expected, state volcanologists said.
The quake, with a depth of 10 km, was detected at 4:08 a.m. in an area 7 km east of Carmen town in North Cotabato province. It was followed by a 4-magnitude quake at 7:31 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
The PHILVOLCS said they expect damages and series of aftershocks.
Ogie Bansigan, a resident of Carmen town, said the strong tremor woke him up.
"Our house was shaking. No one was hurt from us," he said.
The quake was felt at intensity 5 in Kabacan and intensity 4 in Malatam, both in the province of North Cotabato.
On Saturday night, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 5 km jolted Carmen town, causing damages and injuries.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. There are about 20 to 25 earthquakes occurring in the country everyday, most of them not felt by the public. |
