LOS ANGELES, July 7 (Xinhua) -- A moderate quake measuring 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale shook south California on Wednesday afternoon, and was felt by many residents from Los Angeles to San Diego.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to the Los Angeles city and county fire departments.

The quake, which occurred at 2353 GMT on Wednesday, was centered 13 miles (about 20 kilometers) north of Borrego Springs, not far from San Diego, about 90 miles (144 kilometers) south of Los Angeles, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake shook buildings across Southern California, and was felt strongly in downtown San Diego. The temblor also rattled buildings in Los Angeles.

Residents of Los Angeles said they felt a "pretty strong" quake that lasted about 10 seconds.

Officials and Los Angeles International Airport said the airport was operating normally, with no reported flight disruptions.

The shaker was followed by a series of aftershocks in the Borrego Springs area, most measuring around magnitude 3.
