UNITED NATIONS -- A senior Chinese diplomat to the UN on Wednesday called on the international community to actively help Central African countries achieve peace and stability.
Li Baodong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement while addressing a Security Council meeting on the situation in the Central African region.
"Central Africa is still faced with many challenges in peace and security," said Li. "This is especially true that situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) and eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains still turbulent."
China hoped relevant parties abandon all forms of violence and resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiation, Li said, urging the international community to provide support to relevant countries and organizations "on the basis of full respect of sovereignty of countries in the region."
The Chinese ambassador highlighted the importance of ending the threat posed by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), which has raged across these four Central African countries, and is now believed holed up in Kafia Kingi, Sudan.
"China strongly condemns LRA's attacks on civilians and demands its immediate disarmament," Li said. "International community should continue to support the countries in the region in fighting against the LRA."
In addition, Li warned of the other non-traditional threats such as piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, arms smuggling and transnational organized crime.
"International community should provide necessary support to the relevant countries through information sharing, exchange of experiences, technical assistance and capacity building, while adopting integrated policies to address the problem of economic and social development, which is the root cause of the region issues," Li added. |
